SLUTS WITH GUTS
Those who follow Zombie Joe's work have come to expect shows that are beyond the edge of the envelope. The troupe looks for ways to depict slivers of life (as opposed to slices) and to magnify the little quirks so that every absurdity is splashed in your face with a heavy dose of comic lampoon.
This show is no different. Eight women with an uncanny flair for the comic absurd descend upon the audience of Zombie-ites, and with a very loose thread of a story of telephone marketers, wing their way through a series of skits, sketches and improvs that keep the crowd going in a mild roar.
Each one becomes two or three characters as the show moves along, getting input from the audience and then taking a word or two and running with it until it has been stretched to the limit. Then they go a little further, just to see if they can - - - (they can).
No doubt they have guts. Any one who performs zany antics in front of a demanding crowd has to have guts; and as far as the sluts part - well . . . they play characters that are card carrying members of the "Grotesque Populace" so that even if you actually know somebody like that - you will deny it if you're smart.
The group is made up of Alison Cardoso, Paula Christensen, Melody Mooney, Laura Natwick, Annie K. Rollins, Mandy Schneider, Heather K Stout and Jana Wimer.
Even though the costumes are fairly non-descript (jeans and a t-shirt mostly), the group gets into it when they do their long form improv, and really sizzles in "Kelly's First Apartment", a laugher about a mother's influence on the daughter's attempt for independence. The "promo" for "Loot McGloot's Bar and & Video" could reach Zombie cult status someday.
Directed by "The Watchdog" (Zombie regulars know the real identity), and produced by Zombie Joe, this show is a definite Friday night must if you just want to go somewhere and laugh.
